Recently, Dr. Amir Burney had the privilege of visiting the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto (SMBB) Institute of Trauma in Karachi, Pakistan. The visit was facilitated by Dr. Sabir Memon, the Executive Director of the institute, who extended a gracious invitation to explore the state-of-the-art facility.
During the visit, Dr. Qirat Ul Ain, Head of the Emergency Department, provided a comprehensive overview of the trauma center’s operations and services. Following the presentation, Dr. Sabir Memon personally guided Dr. Burney on a detailed tour of the institute’s various departments.
The SMBB Institute of Trauma is an impressive facility spanning 13 floors, equipped with a wide range of specialized departments. These include the Emergency Room (ER), Intensive Care Units (ICUs), High Dependency Units (HDUs), a Surgical Assessment Unit, and an operation suite featuring 14 operation theaters. Additionally, the institute houses departments dedicated to Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Research & Development, and Rehabilitation, among others.
Dr. Burney was deeply inspired by the dedication and commitment of the healthcare professionals at the institute. Their tireless efforts to provide free, high-quality medical services to the people of Karachi and surrounding regions of Sindh province are truly commendable. Karachi, a megacity with a population exceeding 20 million, places immense pressure on the institution to deliver round-the-clock care. The SMBB Institute of Trauma rises to this challenge, operating 24 hours a day, every day, to meet the critical needs of its patients.
Situated adjacent to Civil Hospital Karachi and Dow University of Health Sciences, the institute holds a special significance for Dr. Burney and many of his colleagues, who are proud alumni of Dow Medical College (DUHS). Dr. Burney encourages everyone to visit the SMBB Institute of Trauma and support its mission in any way possible. Funding, as well as the procurement of life-saving medications and equipment, remains a top priority for the institution.
Dr. Amir Burney reaffirms his commitment to supporting Dr. Sabir Memon and his team at the SMBB Institute of Trauma in their noble mission to provide exceptional trauma care to those in need.
