Visiting Faculty for the Masters in Medical Education at University College of Medicine & Dentistry, The University of Lahore (UOL) March 2023

Dr. Burney was invited as a visiting faculty member to deliver teaching sessions for students in the Masters in Medical Education (MME) program at the University College of Medicine & Dentistry, The University of Lahore. Dr. Burney represented The School of Medicine and Population Health, University of Sheffield, and conducted sessions on the following topics:

  1. Principles of adult learning
  2. Characteristics of adult learners – Learning Domains/Bloom’s Taxonomy
  3. Case-Based Learning
  4. Teaching and learning in the clinical environment
  5. Simulation in medical education

Each session, lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes, received highly positive feedback from participants and faculty alike.

Invited Speaker at The MEET Symposium - Medical Education Emerging Trends University College of Medicine & Dentistry, The University of Lahore (UOL), Pakistan, March 2023

Dr. Burney was invited to speak at the MEET symposium, where he presented on ‘The Patients as Educators Programme Sheffield – The Past, Present, and Future’. His talk, which emphasized involving patients in medical education, was well-received by the audience, who were impressed by Sheffield Medical School’s initiatives.

Faculty Development Session

During his visit to UOL, Dr. Burney conducted a two-hour workshop for academic staff, consultants, and junior doctors, focusing on the involvement of patients in medical education. He showcased examples from The Sheffield Patients as Educators Programme (PAE), and the session was highly appreciated by attendees.

Teaching Sessions for Medical Students, University of Lahore

Dr. Burney conducted sessions for third-year and final-year medical students on:

  • Communication skills – Talking with your patient
  • The ‘nearly perfect history’

STEM Education Project Collaboration between The School of Medicine and Population Health, and University of Health Sciences Lahore, Pakistan Supported by the British Council in Pakistan.

Dr. Burney, alongside Dr. Benjamin Jackson, played an integral role in developing and delivering online workshops, with a focus on ‘transformational learning’. The three-day workshops facilitated participants’ understanding of innovative learning methodologies in undergraduate medical education. The University of Health Sciences, Lahore, acknowledged the contributions of the team from AUME during a formal closing ceremony in June 2023. This project generated a revenue stream and established new partnerships with medical universities in Pakistan.  The project trained over 150 master trainers across 48 medical colleges/schools affiliated with the University of Health Sciences Lahore, Pakistan. These master trainers now impart methodologies of transformational, problem-based, and blended learning across Punjab and Kashmir

Visit to the University Hospital, University of Lahore

Dr. Burney toured the University Hospital, meeting various clinical staff and exploring their clinical skills lab, which is accredited by the American Heart Association for basic life support training. Discussions about future collaborations with the University of Sheffield were initiated.
